How do I calculate the electricity cost of an appliance?
To calculate the cost, you need to know the appliance's wattage, how many hours it runs, and your electricity rate. Multiply the wattage by the hours used to get watt-hours. Divide by 1,000 to get kilowatt-hours (kWh), and then multiply by your electricity rate per kWh.
Should I use rated wattage or measured wattage?
Measured wattage is always more accurate. The rated wattage on the appliance label is the maximum power it can draw. Many modern appliances, especially those with variable-speed motors or compressors, use less than their rated wattage on average.
Why do refrigerators and other appliances cycle on and off?
Appliances like refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners use thermostats to maintain a specific temperature. They run only when needed (this is called their 'duty cycle'). Because they cycle on and off, they use significantly less electricity than if they ran continuously.
What electricity rate should I enter?
You should use your exact residential electricity rate per kilowatt-hour (kWh), which you can find on your most recent utility bill. This rate can vary significantly depending on your location, time of use, and utility provider.
Why might the estimate differ from my utility bill?
Estimates are based on average power consumption and standard runtimes. Your actual bill may differ because appliances may run longer or use more power depending on environmental factors (like room temperature) and because bills often include fixed fees, taxes, and tiered rates.
