Phantom loads, or vampire power, occur when electronics draw electricity even while switched 'off' or in standby mode. This hidden consumption can account for 5% to 10% of a typical household's electricity bill.
What is a phantom load?
Many modern appliances do not completely sever their connection to the power grid when you press the power button. Instead, they enter a standby state. They continue drawing a trickle of electricity to power digital clocks, maintain network connections (Wi-Fi), or listen for a signal from a remote control. Collectively, these small draws are known as phantom loads or vampire power.
Common vampire appliances
The worst offenders are usually home entertainment and home office equipment. Common culprits include:
- Game Consoles: Often left in "Instant-On" mode to download updates in the background.
- Televisions and Audio Receivers: Always listening for a remote control signal.
- Smart Speakers and Displays: Constantly connected to Wi-Fi and listening for wake words.
- Cable or Satellite Boxes: Maintaining programming guides and network connections.
- Microwaves and Coffee Makers: Powering bright digital clock displays 24/7.
Calculating standby energy waste
Because standby power runs continuously (24 hours a day, 365 days a year), even a very low wattage can add up over time. You calculate it using the standard energy formula, assuming continuous operation.
Definitions
- Standby Watts: The power drawn while the device is turned 'off'.
- 8,760: The number of hours in a year (24 × 365).
Example
A game console drawing 15W in standby costs (15 ÷ 1,000) × 8760 × $0.15 = $19.71 per year to do absolutely nothing.
Worked standby example
Let's evaluate a home entertainment center containing a TV, a cable box, and a soundbar. Together, they draw a combined 25 watts while completely "turned off." The local electricity rate is $0.18/kWh.

How to stop phantom loads
The simplest way to stop a phantom load is to unplug the device. However, this is rarely convenient. The best solution is to use an advanced or "smart" power strip.
- Smart Power Strips: These detect when a primary device (like a TV) is turned off, and automatically cut power to peripheral devices (like a soundbar and DVD player).
- Switched Outlets: Plug equipment into an outlet controlled by a wall switch.
- Change Device Settings: Many modern game consoles and TVs have an "Eco" or "Energy Saving" mode in their software settings that disables instant-on features and drastically reduces standby power.
