Portable electric space heaters are highly expensive to operate because electricity costs more than natural gas. They only save you money if you use them to heat a single occupied room while drastically lowering your central thermostat for the rest of the house.
The high cost of electric resistance
Portable space heaters use "electric resistance" to create heat. While this process is technically 100% efficient (all the electricity is converted into heat), electricity is a premium, expensive fuel source compared to natural gas.
A standard portable heater runs at 1,500 watts on its "High" setting. This means it consumes 1.5 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity for every hour it runs. If left running continuously for a month, a single space heater can add over $150 to your utility bill.
The 1,500-watt limit
Regardless of the marketing claims—whether the box says "Infrared," "Ceramic," "Oil-Filled," or "Quartz"—every standard space heater sold in the US produces the exact same amount of heat. They are all hard-capped by law at 1,500 watts because that is the maximum continuous safe draw for a standard 15-amp household wall outlet.
A $300 wood-paneled Amish infrared heater produces the exact same 5,118 BTUs of heat as a $25 plastic fan heater from a big-box store. They simply distribute the heat differently. There is no such thing as a "miracle" or "ultra-efficient" electric space heater.
When space heaters actually save money
Space heaters are designed for "zone heating." They only save you money if you employ them correctly.
If you keep your central gas furnace set to 70°F, and plug a space heater in because your feet feel cold in the office, your energy bill will increase dramatically.
To save money, you must drop your central thermostat aggressively—down to 60°F or 62°F, saving substantial gas across the entire house—and use the space heater to warm only the single 10x10 room you are currently occupying.

Let's calculate the cost of running a 1,500-watt heater in a home office for 8 hours a day, 20 days a month, at a rate of $0.16/kWh.

Critical safety rules
Because they draw maximum amperage continuously, space heaters are a leading cause of winter house fires. You must follow strict safety protocols:
- Direct Wall Outlets Only: Never, ever plug a space heater into a power strip, surge protector, or extension cord. The high current can melt the plastic and cause a fire.
- Clearance: Keep the heater at least 3 feet away from anything combustible, including curtains, bedding, rugs, and furniture.
- Supervision: Never run a space heater while you are asleep or absent from the room.
- Safety Features: Ensure any heater you buy has a UL label, a tip-over switch (which shuts it off if knocked down), and an overheat sensor.
