Peak electricity rates are expensive charges applied during hours of high grid demand (usually late afternoon). Off-peak rates are heavily discounted charges applied when demand is low (overnight). Shifting heavy appliance usage to off-peak hours can drastically lower your bill.
Why do utilities use peak pricing?
The electrical grid must instantly supply exactly as much power as users demand. On a hot summer afternoon, when everyone comes home from work and turns on their air conditioning, the grid is stressed. To meet this peak demand, utilities have to fire up expensive, inefficient backup "peaker plants."
To discourage people from using electricity during these critical hours, utilities implement Time-of-Use (TOU) pricing. They make peak hours very expensive and off-peak hours very cheap, incentivizing you to shift your usage.
When are peak hours?
Peak hours vary depending on your specific utility and the season, but they generally follow predictable patterns:
- Summer Peak: Usually 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM, driven by residential air conditioning.
- Winter Peak: Sometimes split into two peaks: a morning peak (6:00 AM to 9:00 AM) when people wake up and turn on the heat, and an evening peak.
- Off-Peak: Usually overnight (10:00 PM to 6:00 AM) and all day on weekends and holidays.
How to shift your energy loads
You cannot stop your refrigerator from running during peak hours, but you can control your largest, most energy-intensive appliances:
- Dishwashers: Use the "Delay Start" button to run the dishwasher at 1:00 AM.
- Laundry: Wait until the weekend (which is usually off-peak) to wash and dry clothes.
- EV Charging: Program your electric vehicle to only accept a charge after midnight.
- Pre-cooling: Run your AC hard in the early afternoon while power is cheap, then raise the thermostat during the 4 PM to 9 PM peak to coast on the trapped cold air.
Worked cost savings example
A household runs their electric clothes dryer for 20 hours a month. Their utility charges $0.28/kWh during peak hours (4 PM - 9 PM) and $0.12/kWh during off-peak hours (overnight and weekends). The dryer draws 3,000 watts (3 kW).
