Level 1 vs Level 2 EV Charging Explained

Level 1 charging uses a standard wall outlet and adds about 4 miles of range per hour. Level 2 requires a dedicated 240V circuit and adds 15 to 30 miles of range per hour, fully charging an EV overnight.
Level 1 charging (120V)
Every EV comes with a Level 1 charging cord that plugs directly into a standard 120-volt household outlet. It operates at 1.4 kilowatts (kW) and is the slowest method of charging, adding roughly 3 to 5 miles of range per hour.
While slow, Level 1 is completely free to install and is often perfectly adequate for drivers with short daily commutes (under 30 miles) who can leave their car plugged in for 10 to 12 hours overnight.
Level 2 charging (240V)
Level 2 charging operates on a 240-volt circuit, similar to an electric oven. These chargers deliver between 7 kW and 11 kW of power, adding 15 to 30 miles of range per hour.
Upgrading to Level 2 requires hiring an electrician to install a dedicated circuit and purchasing a charging station. Total installation costs typically range from $500 to $2,000, depending on the distance from your electrical panel.
Efficiency differences
When charging an EV, a small amount of electricity is lost as heat, and the car's computers must remain awake during the process. Because Level 1 charging takes so long, the car's computers run for hours, wasting energy.
Level 1 charging is typically 80% to 85% efficient, meaning 15% of the electricity you pay for never makes it into the battery. Level 2 charging is roughly 90% to 94% efficient, saving you money on your utility bill over the lifespan of the vehicle.

- Battery Capacity: The usable size of your EV battery in kWh.
- Efficiency: 85% (0.85) for Level 1; 90% (0.90) for Level 2.
Example
To add 10 kWh to a battery using a Level 1 charger (85% efficient), you must pull 11.7 kWh from the wall (10 ÷ 0.85). At $0.15/kWh, the charging loss costs $0.26.

Which do you need?
If you drive less than 40 miles a day and park at home for 10 hours a night, a Level 1 charger will meet your daily needs for free. If you have a long commute, take frequent long trips, or own a large electric truck with a massive battery, a Level 2 charger is a necessary investment.
