Methodology

This calculator determines the monthly energy needs for both vehicles based on the miles driven. For the EV, we divide miles by miles/kWh to get total kWh, then multiply by the electricity rate. For the gas car, we divide miles by MPG to get total gallons, then multiply by the gas price.

What is a good EV Efficiency number?
EV efficiency is measured in miles per kWh. A heavy electric truck might get 1.5 to 2.0 miles/kWh. A standard crossover usually gets around 3.0 to 3.5 miles/kWh. An efficient sedan like a Tesla Model 3 or Hyundai Ioniq 6 can get 4.0 or higher.
Does this include maintenance?
No. This calculator strictly compares the cost of energy (electricity vs. gasoline). EVs generally have lower maintenance costs (no oil changes, fewer moving parts, less brake wear due to regenerative braking), which increases the total savings over time.
Are there times an EV costs more to fuel?
Yes. If you have extremely expensive residential electricity (e.g., >35¢/kWh) and you are comparing it to a highly efficient hybrid car (e.g., 55 MPG) in an area with very cheap gas, the EV might cost more per mile to drive. Public DC Fast Charging can also be more expensive than gasoline in some areas.
